THE KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCY OF BARANGAY COUNCIL FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN IN HANDLING CASES OF CHILDREN IN CONFLICT WITH THE LAW

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to reveal the level of knowledge and competency of the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children in handling cases of children in conflict with the law. The study aims to show how the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children in Lucena City are well-aware about the tasks as written in the Barangay Protocol from the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Council as released in 2017. The study used the triangulation design, or the mixed method of quantitative and qualitative analysis, in order to find out the knowledge level and competency level of the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children in handling cases of children in conflict with the law, selected based on the records from the Reception and Action Center. The data gathered from the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children was supported by the perception of a court social worker, police officer, and a CICL in Lucena City. According to the findings, the data gathered from the BCPC was contradicted by a CICL. In general, the study recommended training which aims to strengthen the roles and responsibilities of Barangay Council for the Protection of Children as enhancement of their knowledge and competency in serving their communities.
