Abstract:

The main purpose of the study was to determine the production and cost efficiencies as basis for sustainability of water hyacinth bags in Brgy. Butong, City of Cabuyao, Laguna. A purposive sampling technique is used because of its non probability sample that is selected based on the characteristics of population and the objective of this study. The respondents of the study were 5 water hyacinth bags manufacturers in Cabuyao City, Calamba City, Las Piñas City, Los Baños, and Taguig City. The researchers used a descriptive method to identify and to analyze the information because they are accustomed to this method. Then, questionnaire was used as main instrument for gathering data. The researchers used Frequency and Percentage Distribution, weighted mean, and Chi- Square as statistical tools in analyzing and interpreting the data. The presentation of findings and conclusions were based on the problems under Statement of the Problem. The findings showed that majority of the respondents are 30-39 years old, female, earning 6,000-10,000 monthly, and actively operating their business from 5-10 years. It was found that the respondents preferred purchasing the raw materials from a supplier because it contributes to the production efficiency. Production is efficient by the help of certain technologies such as the electric flattener and dyeing machine. The technology that helps production efficiency contributes to the production quality requirement. However, there is certain tehcnologies that does not contribute to the production efficiency, like the used of oven to dry the stalks. Instead, the respondents preferred drying the stalks under direct sunlight to protect the them from breaking. In terms of working hours, the respondents prefer working during their free time. The cost efficiency was determined through the transportation, labor, and agglomeration. The researchers found out that purchasing from a supplier of raw materials is more cost efficient than harvesting water hyacinth stalks, for it provides conveniency in the transaction and cuts off extra labor involved in harvesting the stalks. Finally, the researchers found out that cost efficiency follows when the production efficiency is met.
