Jasmine Louise Sumodevilla
Abstract:
Teacher’s competency is significant in giving quality
education. Thus, this study focused on the relationship of
teachers’ professional competencies in terms of planning,
instructional, management, evaluation, and professional
development on students’ academic performance. The study
utilized the descriptive-correlational design. Descriptive
statistics and inferential analysis such as Pearson product
moment correlation were used as statistical tools of the study.
It covered the junior high school teachers of the secondary
school of Libertad District. The academic performance was
based on the general weighted average of the students in
the 1st and 2nd Quarter of school year 2020-2021.
The findings revealed that majority of the junior high
school students of Libertad District were very satisfactory
in their academic performance during the 1st and 2nd
quarter of school year 2020-2021. The extent of teachers’
professional competencies in terms of planning, instructional,
management, evaluation, and professional development
was described as “very highly competent”. Further, there
was significant relationship between teachers’ professional
competencies and students’ academic performance.
The study concludes that teachers’ professional
competencies and students’ academic performance has
a weak positive relationship. Though teachers are very
highly competent in planning, instructional, management,
evaluation, and professional development, there are other
factors that improves students’ academic performance which include students’ learning skills, parental background,
peer influence, learning infrastructure among others.
