Abstract:

The study aimed to analyze the macro skills in the reading proficiency level of seventh grade students to address the issue of having low comprehension and vocabulary. Quasiexperimental design was used in this study. Two sections of the Grade 7 students were purposely chosen from the three sections with thirty students (30) respondents each section. Respondents were divided into two groups: controlled and experimental. Based on the results of the study, many of the respondents in the controlled and experimental group needed guidance from the reading teacher when the initial test was given. It was also noted that most of the respondents improved their scores after the post test was given. The scores of the respondents improved from being Frustration level to Instructional and Independent levels. It was also noted that there was a change in the scores of the students in the experimental group when the BOKANAWA intervention was applied as compared from their scores in the pretest. There was only a small difference in the results of the pretest and post tests of the respondents between the control and experimental groups so there was no significant difference and the null hypothesis was confirmed. Respondents’ reading proficiency level was also not affected in reference to their profile. Based on the results of the study, teachers are encouraged to research new and interesting strategies for teaching reading comprehension. Using BOKANAWA focuses on developing students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension. Encourage students to read literary works so that they can enrich their reading skills. Hence, the researcher developed a guide to the use of BOKANAWA as a reading instructional tool and other teaching methods and strategies
