Assessment of the USI BUHAI KALUSUGAN: 5-Year Community Development Health and Nutrition Program in Bonot-Sta. Rosa, Calabanga, Camarines Sur, Philippines

Abstract:

The 5-year development program of USI BUHAI-CES along the BUHAIKALUSUGAN component implemented in Barangay Bonot-Sta, Calabanga, Camarines Sur, was assessed in this study. A mixed-method design was used, which included a quantitative survey to determine the respondents' demographic characteristics and primary data, as well as Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to collect and validate data. Results revealed that the BUHAI KALUSUGAN Program, specifically the Mother's Class and the Nutrition and Feeding Program, were highlighted by the respondents as the most significant and life-changing, which was rated as "High Acquirability" along with knowledge, "Highly Practiced" in terms of skills, and "Positive Disposition" on attitude, hence the increased health consciousness, responsibility, and engagement. It is recommended that the Health and Nutrition Program be sustained and enhanced by highlighting the mother's class, nutrition program package for malnourished children, and health and wellness advocacy projects. Leadership skills and capability development initiatives should be enriched by creating and training a health core group of local volunteers recognized as Barangay health advocates and as CES partners to reinforce community participation and engagement. Further, the CES monitoring and evaluating mechanisms should be reviewed, and a standardized monitoring and evaluation tool be developed and incorporated into the CES activities and mechanism.
