Unveiling Perspectives on the Use of Closed-Circuit Television in Nepalese Schools

Abstract:

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras have played an influential role in safeguarding security, discipline, and a conducive learning environment in Nepalese schools. However, as surveillance technology is gradually being installed and used, there is a growing concern about privacy violations. In this context, the article aims to explore the stakeholders’ perspectives on the impact of surveillance technology on their privacy rights. To meet the objective, we have employed a phenomenological research design, in which we have purposively selected fifteen informants from the three selected schools. We employed semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, field notes, and Google Forms as tools to gather content-rich data. Findings indicate that cultivating shared responsibilities is imperative for building a conducive learning culture in schools. Surveillance technology also nurtures suspicion among stakeholders, along with acknowledging the importance of comprehensive policy, and students’ privacy concerns to ensure a safe and friendly learning culture.
