Coaching Styles and Coaching Behaviors of The Coaches

Abstract:

The major concern of this study is to determine the coaching styles and coaching behaviors of the coaches and the motivational factors used by coaches to influence the performance of athletes. Specifically this sought answers to the following questions: (1) what are the coaching styles and coaching behaviors of the coaches?; (2) what are the coaching styles and coaching behaviors of the coaches when the athletes are grouped according to awards received and level of competition?; (3) what are the motivational factors used by coaches to influence the performance of athletes?; (4) is there a significant difference in the motivational factors in the performance of athletes considering the coaching styles and coaching behaviors? and (5) is there a significant difference in the coaching styles and coaching behaviors of the coaches when the athletes are grouped according to awards received and level of competition? This study makes used of the mixed method of research employing both qualitative-quantitative research to determine what does it takes to be an athlete in consideration to the coaching styles and coaching behaviors of the coaches and the motivational factors used by coaches to influence the performance of athletes. Among the coaching styles, the most common style reflected in the results was the democratic style while the least common style used by coaches was the authoritarian style. This shows that coaches mostly used democratic style where they prevail to provide a relaxed and positive environment conducive for their athletes. Athletic Managers, Sports Officials and Sports Coordinators may organize yearly sports program/activities/orientation and trainings through schools or Athletic Associations to enrich the technical and personal development as well as the coaching experience of the coaches.
