The Recovery of the Soul in Psychology

Roseann R. Tan

Discipline: Psychology

Abstract:

The teaching of psychology usually starts off with its definition the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. This definition might lead to the mention of soul or psyche from which psychology was derived but any further mention of soul or its appearance ends there. Although the study of human behavior and the mind has helped people understand themselves and others, this focus in psychology hardly facilitates the exploration of one's interior life. The depth psychology that Freud ushered in with his psychoanalysis is a vital" area in psychology in exploring the psyche, but even its study in the classroom remains stuck on the level of concepts; as such, it is ironically lacking in depth, for to study the psyche necessitates engaging the soul.
