Abstract:

Community-based tourism initiatives (CBTI) are tools for strengthening the use of tourism resources in rural areas while ensuring community participation. The study assessed the students’ awareness and participation in community-based tourism activities as the basis for a sustainable program. The study selected 134 tourism students in a private HEI as respondents using a stratified random sample technique and a descriptive research design. A validated and pilot-tested questionnaire created by the researcher was used to collect data, and statistical measures such as weighted mean, frequency and percentage distribution, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to analyze the data. Throughout the research procedure, ethical guidelines, including informed consent, were closely adhered to. The findings indicate that students' opinions and interests about sustainable tourism and community-based tourism differ significantly. Additionally, respondents' lifestyles differed significantly in their usage of locally produced goods, involvement in community programs, and engagement in rural tourism. However, other economic and environmental factors, such as the amount of time spent researching tourism-related concepts and the consumption of locally produced goods, did not give these indications statistical significance. The results emphasize how crucial it is for higher education institutions to actively involve students in the development, execution, and oversight of community-based tourism initiatives. Promoting sustainable tourism growth requires ensuring that group efforts and consistent program monitoring are implemented.
