The Power of Christian Non-Violence

Discipline: Literature, Humanities

Abstract:

In his popular encyclical. The Gospel of Life(I995), Pope John Paul II notes with approval the way in which more and more people are rejecting warfare as a means of settling disputes between nations and within nations. Probably John Paul II was thinking of the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe in the face of groups like Solidarity in his home country of Poland and of the victory of "people power" here in the Philippines in 1986. Even as this book review is being written the Philippines is celebrating EDSA Two, as a "people power" victory over the corrupt Estrada government.
