Abstract:

Tourism is an activity that bears a direct influence on the sociocultural dynamics of societies, particularly in those places that become destinations or resorts. Among the multiple factors of the tourist system, the processes of selection, design and implementation of materials that, put together, provide the construct of an image, constitute a basic aspect when studying the mechanisms of attributing meaning and re-attributing meaning on any given territory. The present study analyses these processes processes of imagebuilding through images presented in brochures and websites relating to Fuerteventura, one of the islands of the Canary Islands, Spain. On the island, there would seem to be a trend towards reconversion and differentiation of the resort on the part of the local authorities. This process is generating contradictions in the strategy of selection and attributed meaning of the tourism and resources, between said authorities and the rest of the agents responsible for generating images, the latter of which continue to focus their image-construct on the present demand for the resort.
