Abstract:

Film is a great educational medium for transmitting ideas. It is an effective tool in arousing students’ interest in recreating the past and in bringing the outside world into the classroom. Learning will be enduring because the knowledge being imparted does not only pass through the sense of hearing, but also through the sense of sight. Descriptive type of research using a questionnaire and follow-up interviews was used in this study. It determined the students’ profile in terms of gender, family status, exposure to films and academic performance. It also surveyed the film types students often watch and film characteristics that hold their attention, and looked into the ways on how films are to be utilized in teaching. Based on the findings, there is still a need for teachers to enhance the ways of teaching films in the class. Varied techniques should be utilized for the students to become highly interested of the lesson. Teachers need to be innovative in ways of using films. Adequate knowledge is needed on the characteristics of films that can hold the attention of the viewers. The study reveals that the utilization of films in teaching English Literature would enhance student learning.
