Memes As A Mnemonic Strategy In Enhancing Vocabulary Learning

Abstract:

Vocabulary, as the heart of a language, is an essential part of learning specifically in language acquisition, facilitating effective communication, comprehension, and critical thinking. This quasiexperimental study investigated the effectiveness of using memes as a mnemonic strategy to enhance vocabulary learning and retention among Grade 7 students at Ifugao Village Integrated School during the School Year 2024-2025. The study compared the vocabulary performance of the experimental or the mnemonic group, taught using memes, and the traditional group wherein traditional teaching method was employed. Key findings revealed that while both groups showed improvement from pretest to post-test, the mnemonic group demonstrated significantly greater gains in vocabulary learning. This resulted to a moderate to large effect size for the meme-based mnemonic strategy. Notably, both high- and lowperforming students in the mnemonic group benefited, although high performers showed more substantial improvement achieving numerically larger gains, the difference in improvement magnitude between high and low performers was not statistically significant. The study concludes that memes serve as an effective mnemonic tool for vocabulary acquisition and retention. Recommendations include professional development for teachers on implementing mnemonic strategies, the integration of such strategies into vocabulary instruction with differentiated approaches for diverse learners, and further research exploring tailored interventions for low-performing students using mnemonics and to cater diverse learners.
