Abstract:

The use of marijuana, presently considered as illegal drugs in the Philippines need to be studied as to the patterns of use, vulnerabilities and effects on the users. Although there are countries that have legalized the use of this substance, attributed generally for its recreational, medicinal and economic contributions; however, the Philippines does not have yet basis for doing so. This descriptive –correlational study was participated in by 100 former marijuana users, presently deprived of liberty in two rehabilitation centers and two jail facilities in Laguna. This study was supported by Social Control, Behavioral Choice, Social Learning, Stress and Coping theories. Through their responses concerning their profile, psychological, physical, socio-economic, societal concerns, medical dimensions on the use of marijuana concerning patterns, vulnerabilities and effects of marijuana use. It likewise established significant difference in responses on the three major variables: Pattern, Vulnerabilities and Effects of marijuana use when grouped according to profile variables and tested the relationship of the aforementioned variables. The data gathered were analyzed both by descriptive and inferential statistics. Overall, the results of this study can serve as basis for creation of programs and services for marijuana users; and also for the benefit of the general public. Moreover, it could also be used as basis for identifying measures by the government on how to prevent marijuana use and other illegal drugs in the Philippines. This study may be used as reference by law makers in legalizing or not marijuana use in the Country.
