The Involvement of Faculty and Staff in Spiritual Activities at Selected Christian Schools

Ian R. Lana

Discipline: Education

Abstract:

This qualitative research explores and compares the involvement of faculty and staff in the spiritual activities of three Christian schools. The researcher conducted three focus group discussions and six key informant interviews. Using thematic analysis, six factors that influenced spiritual involvement emerged from the study: compulsory attendance in religious activities leads to spiritual growth; busyness prevents spiritual involvement; spiritual activities create opportunities for unity among school personnel and for them to lead prayerful lives; an active role leads to increased participation in spiritual activities; spiritual influence creates restorative and transformative experiences; and the schools’ diverse ministerial approach results in varied outcomes. Each school has a distinctive philosophy that shapes its campus ministry: religious tolerance in School X, biblical integration in School Y, and student empowerment in School Z. The translation of the school’s philosophy into campus ministry activities influences the involvement of its personnel.
