Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences: The Basis for Creating a New Learning Approach Appropriate for Teaching Home Economics at Hondagua National High School

Jisa May Julita

Discipline: Education

Abstract:

This paper aimed to study the Multiple Intelligences Theory of Howard Gardner as a basis for creating a new learning approach appropriate for teaching Home Economics. The research design used in this study was descriptivecorrelational. Respondents were composed of two hundred seventy-four (274) students of Hondagua National High School from Grade 7 to Grade 10. This study utilized frequency, rank distribution, percentage, and chi-square as statistical tools. Frequency was used to count the occurrence of intelligence types and student profiles, rank distribution to order them, percentage to show their proportion, and chi-square to test the relationship between intelligence types and student profiles. According to the statistical analysis of the study's results, most respondents were female (65%), while 35% were male. The majority of respondents were in Grade 8 (29%), followed by Grade 10 (27%). In terms of specialization, Cookery was the most common (48%), followed by Bread and Pastry Production (29%), and Horticultural Crop Production (23%). The students were classified into the nine forms of Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. The highest percentage of respondents fell into intrapersonal intelligence (22%), followed by existential intelligence (15%). Other intelligences included body-kinesthetic (13%), naturalistic (11%), musical (9%), linguistic-verbal (8%), interpersonal (7%), logical-mathematical (7%), and visual-spatial (5%). There was no significant correlation between the classification of students' multiple intelligences and their sex, grade level, and specialization. The null hypothesis was accepted, indicating that the classification of students was not substantially related to these factors. This suggests that the new learning approach for teaching Home Economics should cater to the diverse range of intelligences among students, regardless of their demographic characteristics. As a result, JISA Approach was developed by the researcher based on the study's findings and following the researcher's theory. By incorporating Gardner's Theory into the curriculum, educators can create a more inclusive and effective learning environment that supports the unique strengths and abilities of each student.
