Competencies of Malaria Microscopists in Region 1: Basis for a Proposed Capability Enhancement Program

Abstract:

This study aimed to determine the level of competencies of trained malaria microscopists on microscopy diagnostic components in Region I as a basis for a proposed capacity-building program. The study utilized quantitative research design, specifically the descriptive correlational approach. Purposive sampling was used to determine the number of respondents. Data were gathered using competency assessment tool using properly coded malaria slide panel and the competency of the microscopists on microscopy diagnostic components was determined with a research-made validated questionnaire. Results of the study revealed that the malaria microscopists in Region 1 come from varied but rich personal and professional background; are skilled and competent in performing malaria microscopic examination; and have experienced negligible challenges or difficulties and these do not affect their performance as microscopists. Furthermore, results indicate that the performance of malaria microscopists in Region 1 is not affected by their age, professional background, training and professional engagements, and their current employment credentials and that they are not disturbed by some minor difficulties they encounter in their laboratory activities. The research forwards a proposed capacity-building program that may be given to further enhance the skills of the malaria microscopists in Region 1.
