Abstract:

This study aimed to assess the content, technical, and instructional quality of video-based lessons developed and validated for Afro-Asian Literature for the academic year 2022- 2023. Specifically, it addressed the reading proficiency level of Grade 8 students and the effectiveness of these lessons in improving their skills. The study utilized a Quantitative Descriptive method, evaluating the developed lessons through an evaluation sheet questionnaire administered to 20 English teachers and 10 Master teachers in English from public schools in Rodriguez and San Mateo, Philippines. The data were analyzed using Percentage, Ranking, Weighted Mean, and Independent-Samples t-tests. Findings revealed that 52.83% of Grade 8 students were at the frustrating reading level, while 33.61% were independent readers and 13.56% were instructional readers, with no non- readers identified. Least mastered skills included using a range of verbs, adjectives, and adverbs for persuasive expression and determining the meaning of culturally reflective words through context clues. The evaluation of the video-based lessons by both English teachers and Master teachers in English yielded highly acceptable scores for Content Quality (3.82 for English teachers, 3.67 for master teachers), Technical Quality (3.78 for English teachers, 3.72 for master teachers), and Instructional Quality (3.78 for English teachers, 3.59 for master teachers). Further analysis indicated no significant difference between the evaluations of the two groups of respondents. Respondents offered feedback to improve the lessons, suggesting enhanced teacher enthusiasm, noise reduction in recordings, inclusion of background music, and shorter, more focused video content. The study concludes with a thematic analysis revealing a balance of positive feedback and constructive criticism, emphasizing the need for continual improvement to enhance engagement and clarity in video-based learning materials.
