Abstract:
This study investigates disruptive technologies' awareness and adoption tendencies among
medium and large retail enterprises in Bacolod City, addressing a gap in localized research. While global
and national impacts of such technologies have been studied, little is known about how businesses at the
local level perceive and prepare for these innovations. Using a descriptive-correlational design, the research
surveyed 113 retail businesses selected through random sampling from a population of 15,869 registered
enterprises, focusing on those with the capacity to invest in technology. The study employed a validated
and reliable researcher-made questionnaire, gathering data through both online and in-person methods,
and analyzed responses using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Findings reveal that most retail
businesses in Bacolod are small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with moderate capital (Php 15M–Php
100M) and operational experience (11–15 years), predominantly specialty stores offering non-food
products. These firms face challenges in scaling and innovation, likely due to limited access to finance,
managerial expertise, and technological resources. Awareness levels vary across technologies: Artificial
Intelligence (AI) and Big Data have the highest recognition, while 3D Printing and Virtual/Augmented
Reality lag behind. Blockchain shows mixed awareness, with a notable portion very aware but also some
unaware. The results indicate a growing familiarity with core digital technologies that drive data-driven
decision-making and automation, yet highlight significant knowledge gaps in emerging innovations. This
suggests the need for targeted educational programs and policy support to enhance digital transformation
in the local retail sector. The study’s insights are valuable for business owners, policymakers, and
researchers aiming to foster technology adoption and competitive advantage within Bacolod’s retail
industry, aligning with broader findings on SME challenges and opportunities in developing economies.
