Abstract:
This paper explored the case of senior high school students in a rural area in relation to their perception on English as
a medium of instruction (EMI). This study considered the attitudes of senior high school students and implicitly
described its possible relationship to the development of language proficiency among the respondents of the study.
By using a survey questionnaire and structured interviews, the study aimed to describe the attitudes of senior high
school students towards English as a medium of instruction. The participants showed a moderate extent of positive
attitude towards EMI because they feel uncomfortable when teachers use English during lessons; The participants also
showed both positive and negative attitudes toward EMI and its possible effects in their language learning. Although
significant findings were derived, there is a need to further investigate the status of English as a medium of instruction
in the rural contexts.
