The Effect of Bitter Gourd Fruit to the Blood Sugar Level of Type 2 Diabetics

Abstract:

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of mortality in the Philippines and even worldwide. People are now looking into the natural way of healing diseases through any available alternative medications such bitter gourd known locally as ampalaya. This study determined the effect of the bitter gourd fruit in the blood glucose levels of type 2 Diabetics before and after the five-day treatment protocol of the three groups. Quasi-experimental design (pre & post test) was utilized using glucometer in assessing the blood sugar levels of the respondents. Systematic random sampling was used in choosing the diabetic respondents from Camputhaw, Cebu City, Philippines. T-test was applied in determining the significant reduction in the blood glucose level of the respondents before and after the treatment. The findings revealed that bitter gourd fruit had a significant effect in reducing and controlling the FBS of type 2 diabetics and are highly effective when taken with prescribed oral hypoglycemics. It is concluded that among individuals with prediabetes range, bitter gourd fruit could be taken as a diet regimen and preventive measure to control their FBS level. The researcher recommended that further study be undertaken by different institutions and increase the number of respondents.
