Learners' Academic Workload and their Mental Well-Being Amidst Extreme Summer Heat

Abstract:

This study was conducted in Namnam, Integrated School, San Fernando II, Division of Bukidnon, School Year (SY) 2024-2025. The participants of the study were the five (5) Grade XII learners who have experienced effects of extreme summer heat such as nose bleeding, dizziness, and those who were noted by the teachers to commit absences due to the challenges brought by the extreme summer heat in Namnam Integrated School, San Fernando II, Division of Bukidnon, School Year (SY) 2024-2025. The following themes were revealed in this study: Concentration Challenges in Class, Impact of Extreme Heat on Learning, Heat Disrupts Focus and Academic Success", Classroom Heat Hinders Learning and Focus, Extreme Heat Impairs Focus and Academic Performance and Seeking Relief from Classroom Heat Challenges. The following recommendations are hereby offered: To mitigate the effects of extreme heat on concentration and academic success, learners should prioritize hydration by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Seeking shaded or cooler areas during breaks can also help. Additionally, using portable fans or sitting near ventilation can provide relief. Communicating with teachers about heat-related challenges is crucial for support. Teachers should create a supportive learning environment by allowing flexible seating arrangements near fans or windows to improve airflow. Incorporating frequent breaks for hydration and movement can help students manage discomfort. Additionally, adjusting lesson plans to include more interactive or outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day may enhance engagement and learning despite the heat.
