Social Media Utilization, Study Habits and the Academic Achievement of the Senior High School Students in the New Normal

Abstract:

This study aimed to determine the relationship between social media utilization and study habits and the academic achievement in Araling Panlipunan among senior high school students during the school year 2021–2022 at Macapari National High School, Damulog South District, Division of Bukidnon. Specifically, it examined the prevailing use of common social media platforms, the extent of social media utilization, students’ study habits, and their academic performance. Furthermore, it explored the relationships among these variables. A descriptive-correlational research design was employed, utilizing a structured survey questionnaire as the primary data collection tool. The respondents were senior high school students enrolled at Macapari National High School during the identified academic year. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviations, and Pearson’s r to assess associations among social media use, study habits, and academic performance. Findings indicated that students’ social media utilization was high in terms of accessibility, usability, reliability, and efficiency, with Google+ and Facebook being the most frequently used platforms. Academic achievement was generally rated as very satisfactory. Statistical analysis revealed significant relationships among the commonly used social media platforms, the extent of social media use, study habits, and students’ academic performance. Based on these findings, the null hypothesis was rejected.
