Abstract:

This study assessed the oviposition behavior of the Yellow Stem Borer (YSB) and Rice Bug (RB) on various rice varieties to identify factors influencing crop yield losses and inform pest management strategies. The research was conducted in nine phases: construction of oviposition cages, germination of rice seeds, transplanting of germinated seedlings, acquisition of pupae and adults, male-to-female copulation, egg collection, proper disposal, and data analysis. Thirteen rice cultivars with distinct genetic characteristics were selected to represent a spectrum of resistance and susceptibility. The pests were exposed to these rice varieties, and their oviposition preferences were systematically monitored and recorded. Results revealed significant variation in the quantity and dimensions of eggs deposited by the two pest species across susceptible rice varieties, highlighting species-specific oviposition behaviors. Rice varieties with desirable eating qualities—PSB RC 27, ARABON, NSIC RC 216, PSB RC 18, CALATRAVA, and NSIC RC 480—exhibited higher susceptibility to oviposition. In contrast, varieties such as NSIC RC 442, NSIC RC 222, NSIC RC 160, PSB RC 82, RC 534, RC 506, and CUEVAS showed lower oviposition preference. Morphological traits of the rice varieties, including leaf blade and sheath dimensions, appeared to significantly influence pest preferences and levels of vulnerability. These findings underscore the importance of plant morphology in pest-host interactions and offer insights for developing pest-resistant rice varieties.
