The Impact of “Boluntaryong Lunas Basa” on the Lives of the Pupils of Nueve De Febrero Elementary School

“Boluntaryong Lunas Basa” is a reading tutorial program for Grades I to III pupils of a public elementary school in Mandaluyong City, conducted by volunteer college students of Jose Rizal University, a private higher education institution.


This study followed up one hundred four (104) pupils of Nueve De Febrero Elementary School who were referred by their teachers for “Boluntaryong Lunas Basa” during school year 2008-2009 when they were in Grade II-III, and who are now in Grade V-VI.


The pre-test results identified these students as NR-non reader; SR syllable reader; WR-word reader; PHR-phrase reader and SPR-sentence paragraph-reader; and the post-test results proved the effectiveness of the project. The 52 pupils or 50% of beneficiaries who were non-readers at the beginning became readers at the end of the school year.


The beneficiaries were able to read and at the same time developed responsiveness, responsibility, improved their character and became aware of the importance of education. Thus volunteer tutors of this project had taught the pupils more than reading ability.


After running the “Boluntaryong Lunas Basa” for six school years, from 2006-07 to 2011-12, the contribution of this project had remarkable output: 100% of the beneficiaries were promoted to the next level and the second batch of beneficiaries will graduate in 2013.
