Abstract:
This study aimed to determine the level of awareness on newborn
screening among expectant mothers with a total number of 64
respondents. A survey was administered among the expectant
mothers in barangay Taluksangay, using purposive sampling, with
inclusion criteria of being 18 to 30 years old primiparous or
multiparous. Statistical tools including percentage distribution,
weighted mean, and Kruskal – Wallis were used to answer the problem
in the study. It specifically answered the following question: “What is
the level of awareness among expectant mothers in terms of (a)
general knowledge, (b) perceived benefits, (c) perceived barrier to
action, (d) interpersonal influences?” and “Is there a significant
difference in the level of awareness among expectant mothers when
their demographic profile is considered?”. After thorough analysis and
treatment of the response gathered from the respondents using the
statistical tools prescribed, results indicated a moderate level of
awareness among expectant mothers regarding general knowledge
and perceived barriers to action and interpersonal influences. On the
other hand, awareness was notably higher regarding perceived
benefits associated with NBS. Furthermore, the study found no
significant difference regarding awareness on newborn screening
among expectant mothers when their demographic profile is
considered. Newborn screening stands as a cornerstone of public
health success, emphasizing the importance of disseminating such
knowledge to both genders to foster healthier communities.
