Abstract:

The study identified the government and private hospital pharmacists’ concepts and current practices on pharmaceutical care, and determined any significant differences in respondents’ perceived level of competence and importance of the current pharmaceutical care practices. Data collection was done through self-administered questionnaires on Google Forms sent via email to hospital pharmacists in Level 3 government and private hospitals in CALABARZON Region. These hospitals identified from lists provided by the Department of Health and classified as government or private-owned. A total response rate of 89.16% was recorded (66 of 74). Weighted means and T-test were utilized in data analysis. In general, both groups showed a great understanding of the concepts of pharmaceutical care, though with a few misconceptions must be addressed. Both groups were not performing public health activities, and private hospital pharmacists were not performing patient care activities. Both groups agreed that all activities were important for pharmaceutical care practices. A significant difference was found in competence between Level 3 government and private hospital pharmacists. There is a need for the governing bodies of the profession to revisit and expand on the provision of pharmaceutical care, as better understanding of its concepts will translate into the pharmacists’ current practices. There is a need to increase knowledge of hospital pharmacists about the responsibilities of their profession particularly in public health activities.
