Abstract:
The study was done to determine problems encountered by and coping mechanism of parents
of children with global developmental delay. Data were obtained through the use of questionnaires.
Results show that parents encounter problems like attending to the needs of their children, teaching
them activities needed for learning and participating in classroom, providing the needs of their
children financially, and encouraging them to engage in physical environment. To cope with these
problems, parents resort to praying to God, looking for something good in what is happening,
prioritizing the child, and doing what has to be done one step at a time. This study can help
occupational therapy practitioners familiarize themselves with some of the possible occupationally
centered problems parents of children with GDD encounter. Occupational Therapist can act as a
mediator in special education schools or pediatric centers by holding seminars or informative
lectures to train and counsel parents thus making them more responsible and influential to their
children.
