Discipline: Psychology and Health

Abstract:

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is still one of the most prevalent endocrine conditions present in many women around the world. And this study focused particularly on how body dysmorphic concerns affect the experiences of perceived social support of women with PCOS. The participants of the study are women diagnosed with PCOS. Purposive or judgement sampling, a non-random sample technique, was used by the researchers in selecting the 100 participants that were needed in the study. Accordingly, the researchers utilized a sequential explanatory type of mixed-method research design, a method that gathers and analyzes quantitative and qualitative data in two consecutive periods within a single study. The participants’ body dysmorphic concerns and perceived social support were further evaluated and expounded through the statements they provided. The results of the study indicated that the participants experienced low levels of body dysmorphic concern and high levels of perceived social support. It was also shown that among the profiles, only civil status and current employment status were found to produce significant difference in body dysmorphic concern. While only civil status was found to be significantly different in perceived social support. In the level of respondents perceived social support, data revealed that there is only a significant influence among friends and significant others on participants' body dysmorphic concern. Lastly, the results showed the correlation between the variables. Thus, cognitive behavioral therapy was approved as an intervention program of this study.
