Abstract:

This study investigated the academic motivation and well-being of college students among different courses at one university in Batangas. Participants (n = 398) only included students in their first-year and second-year of schooling within the context of COVID-19, with their learning modality being either a pure digital or hybrid setup. Purposive sampling was used in selecting participants, as the selection was based on the subjective decision of the researchers, and specific criteria were observed to identify the most suitable for the topic of interest. Additionally, the quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis were processed through a sequential explanatory method. Following informed consent distribution, seven (7) virtual interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis was used to interpret the information obtained. Results revealed that most of the respondents were extrinsically motivated and were found to have an average functioning level across all subscales of well-being. It was also shown that there was a significant difference between the subscales of academic motivation and positive emotion when grouped according to sex, between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and overall well-being when grouped by religion, and between intrinsic motivation and positive emotion in terms of year level. Finally, the findings revealed a significant positive and negative relationship between the variables in this study. With that, a proposed enhancement of the guidance and counseling program of the university was developed as the basis for integration aimed at improving the respondent’s intrinsic motivation and well-being.
