The Environmental Impact of the Sanitary Landfills of Bayawan City and Bais City, Negros Oriental, Philippines

Liza J. Caballero

Abstract:

The use of a sanitary landfill represents a viable and most commonly used method for solid waste disposal worldwide. This study determined the environmental impact of the solid wastes disposed of in the sanitary landfills of Bayawan City and Bais City, Negros Oriental, Philippines. It also aimed to determine the significant differences on the volume of its type of wastes disposed of and the comparison of the air quality present in the two landfills. The study made use of the laboratory methods, namely the membrane filter technique, Atomic Absorption Spectrometric Method and a descriptive method for wastes characterization. Results showed that type1 waste is higher in Bayawan City than in Bais City and type 3 wastes are higher in Bais City than in Bayawan City. This is supported on the significant difference of the volume of wastes as to its type, type 1 and 3 are significantly different in the two landfills. On the other hand, carbon dioxide of the two sampling sites is on its acceptable value. However, the carbon dioxide emitted in Bais City landfill is significantly higher than in Bayawan City. Moreover, results on “too numerous to count coliforms” and the level of carbon dioxide must be considered for further study. Thus, a study on the presence of E-coli and other forms of bacteria and leachate collection of other heavy metals must be conducted for further study.
