The Digital Literacy Experiences of Selected Farmer Families in Nueva Ecija

Abstract:
The investigation is part of a more extensive study that delved into the experiences
of farmer families in a northern region of the Philippines. Qualitative in design, the
study looked into the digital literacy of selected farmer families through individual
and group interviews, observations, and transect walks. Narratives reveal three
distinct relationships of digital literacy to livelihood, education, and aspirations.
The acquisition of digital literacy mainly involves getting information for
improving farming, depending on web information from the government, and other
informational websites. Literacy is learned in school and has helped in acquiring
information online for most children. Children who are more adept at using digital
tools acquire digital literacy to communicate with peers and family members while
also using it for study skills. However, this information has made the farmers realize
that a better life can be obtained for their children, who do not necessarily have to
be farmers too, especially if they receive formal education. Thus, digital literacy is
acquired because it presents better opportunities for children, who remain hopeful
for a better future for their families.
