Abstract:

This ethnographic investigation details indigenous hydrometeorology beliefs and practices in sustainable fishing in a component city of the Central Philippines. A potential research aim is to describe and interpret the shared beliefs and practices of local fishermen, focusing on how they apply traditional knowledge in response to local environmental conditions. In collecting this evidence through in-depth interviews and narrative, key themes were brought to light that suggested a link between beliefs relative to the degree of hydrometeors about sustainable fishing observances within the community. According to the study, this work straddles some essential conundrums: While these Indigenous practices may very well be part of what sustains their sustainable fishing processes— in a rapidly changing global climate (as opposed to farm byproducts)— they are continually threatened and often supplanted. Moreover, as we pass knowledge from one generation to another, it is crucial to keep these practices alive. The result highlights the challenges of integrating local wisdom with new methods. Fishermen's hydrometeorological beliefs help keep fishing communities strong and running for extended periods. It also helps fishermen understand how culture and nature work together to support sustainable regional fishing.
