Community Acceptance of Establishing a Sustainable Aqua Eco-Tourism Framework in Lake Lutayan

Abstract:

This study examines the acceptability of establishing a sustainable, community-driven aqua-ecotourism initiative in Lake Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat, through a descriptive-correlational research design. The descriptive method assessed respondents' socio-demographic characteristics and their support for the proposed model, while the correlational analysis investigated the relationship between socio-demographic profiles and levels of support. Key stakeholder groups—residents, government officials, private sector representatives, NGOs, and potential tourists—were purposively sampled for the study. Data collection was conducted via structured questionnaires, with analysis employing descriptive and correlational statistical tools. Findings revealed a predominantly young to middle-aged population with balanced gender representation and rich cultural diversity. The majority of respondents were Maguindanaoan and practiced Islam, highlighting the importance of integrating Islamic principles and family-focused activities in the initiative. Economic challenges were evident, with most respondents engaged in agriculture or informal sectors, necessitating interventions for economic upliftment. High acceptability scores across stakeholder groups (4.47 to 4.60 on a 5-point scale) indicated strong community support. Correlation analyses demonstrated no significant relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and project acceptance, suggesting widespread approval regardless of demographic differences. The study concludes that the proposed aqua-ecotourism project enjoys robust community endorsement, transcending socio-demographic barriers. Recommendations include involving both genders in planning, engaging cultural and minority groups, incorporating Islamic practices, promoting sustainable agriculture, and fostering partnerships among public and private sectors, NGOs, and stakeholders. These measures aim to ensure environmental conservation, economic resilience, and sustainable development for Lake Lutayan and its surrounding communities.
