PROLETARIAN LITERATURE AND MANUEL ARGUILLA'S "CAPS AND LOWER CASE"

Ma. Leilani C. Macatangay

Discipline: Literature

Abstract:

"Caps and Lower Case" cannot be considered a revolutionary story because its main character, a working class person, is defeated by the system.

What is proletarian literature? If Raymond Williams defines literature as a "settled body of works, or kinds of works" (1977:I), and Salvador Lopez defines literature as the continuous interpretation of the experiences of a particular man or woman in relation to one's social milieu (1973), then we can define proletarian literature as a settled body of works or kinds of works that is the continuous interpretation of the experiences of the proletariat.
