Green Practices and Guest Behavioral Intentions in DOT-Accredited Hotels in Albay: Basis for a Hotel Sustainability Plan

Discipline: tourism, transport and travel

Abstract:

The study investigates the correlation between green practices and guest behavioral intentions in DOT-accredited hotels in Albay, with the aim of developing a hotel sustainability plan for the local hotel industry. Specifically, it assesses the extent of implementation of green practices such as sustainable management of water, energy conservation, solid waste management, air quality management, environmental purchasing, and community awareness, as well as its influence on revisit intention, word of mouth recommendations, willingness to pay more, and loyalty. A quantitative research design was employed, with survey questionnaires administered to 197 hotel guests. The findings revealed that solid waste management, energy conservation, and air quality management were the most consistently implemented practices, and a significant positive relationship exists between green practices and guest behavioral intentions. However, the study also reveals that green practices alone are not sufficient to justify higher room rates or to secure longterm guest loyalty. The findings suggest that while environmental initiatives contribute positively to guest perception, they must be complemented by overall service quality and value to create a long-term impact. A hotel sustainability plan is proposed to strengthen the integration of green practices by the local hotel sector and promote Albay as a sustainable tourism destination.
