The Effect Of Carboxymethyl (Cm) Glucan As An Adjunct To Inhaled Corticosteroid Plus Long Acting Beta 2 Agonist In Children With Moderate Persistent Asthma: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION:
Asthma is a chronic disorder of the airways which involve several inflammatory
cells and mediators that result to airway hyperresponsiveness. This inflammatory
reaction can be prevented by preventing allergic sensitization by way of
immunotherapy. This study determined the effect of CM glucan in the prevention of
asthma among children.
METHODS:
A randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial was carried out in 40
patients ages 6 to 12 years old with moderate persistent, partly and uncontrolled
asthma. They were assigned to either placebo or glucan group. Daytime and nighttime
coughing, exacerbations, limitation of activities, use of relievers, FEV1 and level of
control were assessed.
RESULTS:
The results of this trial showed that in the CM glucan group more subjects
showed improvement in terms of daytime and nighttime cough; need for relievers;
exacerbations; and level of control. However, the difference in proportion is minimal
and is not statistically significant.
CONCLUSION:
CM Glucan did not significantly improve symptoms of asthma particularly
daytime and nighttime cough, need for relievers; exacerbations, FEV1 and level of
control after 31/2 months of treatment in children with moderate persistent asthma.
