Abstract:

Objective: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with maternal thyroid dysfunction among patients seen at a single tertiary referral hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Outpatient Clinic from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2022. Methods: This retrospective study reviewed 1,357 patient charts, of which only 34 were diagnosed with maternal thyroid dysfunction. The patient’s demographic details, age of gestation (per trimester) at the time of diagnosis. The researcher obtained the type of thyroid dysfunction, family and personal history of thyroid disorders, and the presence of any comorbidities, and entered them into the database. Discussion: Most subjects in this study were above 30 years old, multiparous, and were in their second trimester at the time of diagnosis. The majority had overt thyroid disorder in general, specifically hyperthyroidism. This study found no causal relationship between thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy and personal history, family history, or the presence of comorbidities. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that multiparous pregnant women who are 30 years old and above were more likely to have overt thyroid disorder.
