Level of Stress and the Coping Mechanisms of Radiologic technologist During Pandemic in Selected Hospitals in Laguna

Abstract:
COVID-19 threatens worldwide public health. Since the World Health Organization classified
COVID-19 a pandemic, health care systems have had to defer less urgent treatment. The imaging
department has played an important role in screening and diagnosing COfVID -19. Radiologic
Technologists who scan infected patients are high-risk medical workers and radiology
department must protect Radiologic Technologists from cross-infection. In this study,
researchers aimed to measure stress level as well as the coping mechanisms of Radiologic
Technologist in selected hospitals in Laguna, by means of gathering data from the Radiologic
Technologists. Descriptive-correlational design was utilized in the study to measure the stress
level, and coping mechanism of the Radiologic Technologists. Using the G-Power Software, a
total of 90 Radiologic Technologists from the selected private hospitals in Laguna are the
respondents of the study. A self-made questionnaire was used as the data collection tool. The
results showed that majority of the respondents were aged 20 -24 years old, male, handled
Diagnostic Radiology (X-rays) and CT scan, and have 5-6 days of duty. Almost all of the
respondents have 5-8 hours of duty per day and a monthly income of Php 10,001- Php 15,000.
Moreover, the results showed that the stress level of the Radiologic Technologists increased
significantly during this COVID-19 pandemic due to burnouts, anxiety, and fear of being
contaminated. To endure this stress, they have come up with different coping mechanisms in
the likes of social support, religious beliefs, distraction activities, and following the guidelines to
COVID-19 prevention.
