Abstract:

The COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread lockdowns, prompting many individuals to rely on self-medication. Analgesics became among the most used medications due to their role in pain management. Young adults are particularly prone to this practice because of low-risk perception, basic medicinal knowledge, easy internet access, and widespread media coverage of health issues. This study aimed to determine the level of awareness and attitude of selected young adults toward the self-medication of analgesics during the pandemic in Barangay Sta. Clara, Sto. Tomas City, Batangas. A modified and adopted questionnaire was utilized to assess respondents’ awareness and attitudes, examine their relationship, and identify differences when grouped by demographic profile. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, Pearson product–moment correlation, t-test, and ANOVA. Results showed that most respondents were females aged 18–23 and undergraduates who tended to self-medicate. Acetaminophen was the most commonly used analgesic, primarily for headache relief due to its perceived effectiveness. Overall, respondents demonstrated moderate awareness and generally positive attitudes toward self-medication of analgesics, believing it helps relieve pain without harming their health. A significant relationship was found between awareness and attitude. No significant differences in awareness and attitude were observed by age or gender, while attitude significantly differed based on educational attainment. The findings highlight the need for improved healthcare education and responsible medication practices.
