Overcoming Barriers to Optimal Breastfeeding Among Mothers in Surallah, South Cotabato

Abstract:

Breastfeeding is widely recognized as a critical component of maternal and child health, yet optimal breastfeeding practices remain a persistent public health challenge in many regions. This study examined the relationship between maternal knowledge of breastfeeding and perceived barriers among 90 mothers in Surallah, South Cotabato, utilizing a descriptive cross-sectional quantitative research design. The results revealed that respondents demonstrated a high level of knowledge regarding breastfeeding (overall mean = 3.15), with strong understanding of its importance, proper techniques, and nutritional requirements. However, mothers encountered moderate levels of perceived barriers (mean = 2.29), with physical discomfort during breastfeeding, emotional and physical exhaustion, and insufficient milk supply emerging as the most significant challenges. The findings suggest that while mothers possess adequate theoretical knowledge, practical and socio-economic challenges continue to hinder optimal breastfeeding practices. Educational attainment and monthly income were found to be significant factors influencing breastfeeding knowledge, indicating the need for targeted interventions that address both knowledge gaps and structural barriers. The study concludes that comprehensive approaches incorporating hands-on lactation support, community-based programs, and socioeconomic assistance are essential to bridge the knowledge-practice gap and improve breastfeeding outcomes.
