Abstract:
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) remain a major occupational health concern among welding and metal fabrication workers due to prolonged static postures, repetitive motions, and poorly designed workstations. This study evaluated the prevalence of musculoskeletal discomfort among welders at Mico Technology and Engineering Works and developed an ergonomically designed workstation to reduce ergonomic risk factors and improve worker performance. An applied research design was utilized involving eight welding assembly workers. Data were collected using demographic profiling, anthropometric measurements, the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA). Results revealed that workers commonly experienced discomfort in the neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back, and arms due to prolonged awkward postures and repetitive welding tasks. Initial RULA assessment indicated a medium musculoskeletal risk with a score of 6, suggesting the need for immediate ergonomic intervention. Based on Filipino anthropometric measurements and ergonomic design principles, a redesigned workstation was developed using tubular steel, stainless steel, and plywood materials. The proposed workstation incorporated improved table height, footrest positioning, lighting arrangement, and work surface dimensions tailored to welding operations. Post-intervention evaluation demonstrated a significant improvement in working posture, reducing the RULA score from 6 to 3, which corresponds to a low musculoskeletal risk level. Findings indicate that ergonomically designed workstations can substantially reduce physical discomfort, improve posture, and enhance worker usability and productivity. The study highlights the importance of integrating ergonomic principles and anthropometric considerations in industrial workstation design to promote occupational health and safety in manufacturing environments.
