Abstract:

Urbanization and climate-related challenges have increased the demand for sustainable and multifunctional public spaces in developing cities. This study proposes the design of the first dome-shaped urban oasis park in the Philippines, located in Poblacion 7, Tanauan City, Batangas, integrating a rainwater harvesting system for landscape irrigation and non-potable water applications. The study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, structural resilience, and environmental sustainability of a dome-shaped urban park through architectural and engineering analysis. A conceptual quantitative research design with a simulation approach was utilized. The proposed structure was developed using AutoCAD 2021, SketchUp Pro 2021, and Lumion 11, while structural analysis was conducted in accordance with the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP 2015). External loads, including wind and rain loads, were computed using meteorological data obtained from the PAGASA Ambulong Synoptic Station. Results showed that the dome structure demonstrated structural stability and resistance to environmental loads, with a computed minimum wind load of 14.28 kN, windward pressure of 263.66 kPa, and rain load of 2.04 kPa. The integration of a gravity drip irrigation system and rainwater harvesting network further enhanced the sustainability and self-sufficiency of the proposed design. Findings indicate that dome-shaped urban oasis parks can serve as resilient, eco-friendly, and multifunctional public infrastructures suitable for tropical urban environments vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.
