Abstract:

Diabetes is a continuing condition as a result of either inadequate insulin produced by pancreas or ineffective consumption of insulin by the body. Oral complications are usually experienced by diabetic patients. Good oral health practices such as proper oral hygiene, elevated frequency of toothbrushing, and regular dental visits help prevent and manage oral health issues and thus, are positively associated with acceptable oral health knowledge. The purpose of this study is to assess the oral health practices and awareness of diabetic patients on their oral health status. A total of 100 diabetic patients were purposively chosen from different barangays who are actively having their check-ups in Dr. Santiago D. Lacdao Memorial Health Center and some fro1n Barangay Antipolo del Sur in Lipa City. An adapted and modified questionnaire was administered by the researchers and is consist of three parts. Frequency count was utilized for the patient's demographic profile and oral health practices while weighted mean was used to evaluate the patient's oral health awareness. Majority of the respondents know the importance of cleaning and flossing their teeth. In addition, most diabetic patients do not floss, but they brush their teeth twice a day, use mouthwash once a day, and visit their dentist once a year, typically for pain relief, tooth cleaning, or other treatments. There was no significant relationship between the demographic profile of the patients and their level of awareness. It was discovered that most diabetic patients are aware of their oral health. In conclusion, the awareness of the diabetic patients regarding their oral health and their oral health practices are quite acceptable. This study can be expanded into a similar study on a different setting to discover new knowledge and add to the limited literature on the oral health practices and awareness of diabetic patients on their oral health status. Thus, the study has established a proposed action plan that can be used to increase diabetic patients' awareness of their dental health status.
