Abstract:
Pregnancy is a unique stage in a woman's life. Several physiological changes occur in a woman's body during pregnancy that lead to oral health problems, including hormonal changes, variations in dental self-care practices, and dietary patterns. Dental self-care is one approach by which pregnant women can actively manage their dental health without access to professional care and procedures. This study aimed to determine the relationship of dental experiences and dental self-care practices of pregnant women. It used descriptive method and utilized 217 respondents which is the computed sample size of the total number ( 493) of pregnant women in Malvar, Batangas. Questionnaire as primary gathering instrument was adapted and modified to suit the current study. Frequency count and weighted 1nean was used to determine the respondent's demographic profile and evaluate if there is a significant relationship between the dental experiences and dental self-care practices with 0.05 Alpha level.
Most of the respondents experienced vomiting and nausea, but they show good performance in toothbrushing, flossing and gum caring practices. They often use dental floss as part of their dental self-care routine and never gargle drinking alcohol to minimize the toothache. This indicates a proper mindset regarding the respondent's dental self-care. The result shows that there is a significant relationship between the dental experiences and dental self-care practices of pregnant women in terms of dental care products used, but there is no significant relationship between the dental experiences and dental self-care practices of pregnant women in terms of toothbrushing, flossing and gum caring practices. A plan of action is proposed to improve the dental selfcare practices of pregnant women. The recommendation that was prepared may be considered for implementation.
