Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to describe the profile of patients with
Kawasaki Disease treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) , determine rate of
treatment failure and to identify factors that may affect treatment failure.
DESIGN: Descriptive, retrospective, case control
SETTING: Tertiary Hospital
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total 280 patients were included in the study, Group 1
included children considered to be treatment responders and the Group 2 were considered
to be treatment non responders. SPSS version 15 was used and both descriptive measures
and multivariate analysis were done. Descriptive measures include mean, standard
deviation, odds ratio, contingency tables and cross tabulation.
RESULTS: The clinical characteristics of the patients from the two groups were
compared and only the average number of hospital days were found to be significant
with p < 0.001. The difference between the laboratory examinations of the two groups
including WBC, hematocrit, platelet count, CRP and ESR were found to be not statistically
significant except for neutrophil count with p value < 0.05.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Future studies with a larger
population group and follow up of patients diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease is
recommended.
