The Tobacco Monopoly in the Philippines

Aurelio B. Calderon

Discipline: Social Science

Abstract:

This welcome book - a response to the late Horacio de la Costa's pleas for greater attention to social and economic development in Philippine studies - fills the need for scholars to discover and understand the impact of colonial institutions from the indigenous perspective. Its principal focus is the Tobacco Monopoly, a transplant from Mexico, which lasted for exactly one hundred years, 1781 to 1881.
