Sylvia Plath's Technique of "Doubles" in the Bell Jar Viewed as Personal Catharsis

John Mcniff | Tracy Yarema

Discipline: Cultural Studies

Abstract:

In literature, characters that represent aspects of one complete personality are called "doubles: "Doubles" are psychological projections that are used to represent specific characteristics of a personality—i.e., emotions, values, mannerisms. Some "doubles" are innocent and positive, while others represent suppressed urges; they are "mirror images" that when put together create a complete picture.
