ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT: SOME ECOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN DECISION-MAKING

Armando A. Andaya

Discipline: Ecology

Abstract:

Economic stability and environmental quality are equally important target objectives of the present society. However, the approaches employed to attain these objectives are often in conflict with one other. One sector of society upholds the view that the deterioration of environmental quality is a necessary and justifiable cost of economic development. The other sector subscribes to the current consensus that the long-term objectives of sustainable development can still be pursued without jeopardizing environmental quality. It is held that the management of natural resources should attempt to harmonize the goals of environment and development.
