Abstract:

One of the least known but certainly one of the noblest patriots of our country is DON PACIANO MERCADO RIZAL y ALONZO, the only brother of Dr. Jose Rizal. Born in Calamba, Laguna, on March 7, 1851, he was the second child of the eleven children of Don Francisco Mercado Rizal and Dona Teodora Alonso. Many authorities on the life of the Great Malayan, including Professor Austin Craig, believe that Don Paciano was the philosopher Tasio in the Noli Me Tangere. This opinion of the noted Rizalist was shared by Lieutenant Jose Taviel de Andrade, Rizal's personal bodyguard in 1888, who said that Don Paciano was "el unico hombre en Filipinas, el joven filosofo Tasio."
